Germany: Protest against Red Bull Leipzig - Union organized a friendly match with BSG Chemie Leipzig.

Our friend from Groundhopping etc. sent us this match report.

It's easy to be against something. It's more challenging to suggest alternatives. Union Berlin fans opted for the challenge: as a form of protest against Red Bull Leipzig, they organized an early morning match in Leipzig, at BSG Chemie Leipzig's ground.

"Football in Leipzig as we prefer it" was the motto, and the gritty, down to earth Alfred-Kunze-Sportpark is indeed a much more suitable location for old school support and tifo action than any identikit arena.

But that is also part of the ground's and Chemie's problem: in order to maintain it, the non-league team needs money and started a crowdfunding campaign.

So even though there is not that much love between the two groups, Union fans felt like making a contribution to a club like Chemie was much better than just complaining about RB, and they organized this veterans' teams match, where all the earnings would go directly to the kickstarter.

It went a long way as 4,285 fans showed up, about half of them early risers from Berlin. They obviously also used the opportunity to play with smoke and fire. The match ended scoreless after 2x30 minutes, but nobody cared about that anyway, as the game just set the stage for supporters to indulge in nostalgia while keeping up the hope and express the determination to influence the present time as well.

Attendance: 4287!
